Hi All,

We had some wonderful voices heard by the commissioners, the DCD, and the pro-road group at the Board of Commissioners (BOC) meeting last week. Special thanks to Josie, Derrick, Martin, David, Lynne, and others who spoke out to protect our local environment and preserve this wonderful trail.  We still need your help to preserve this beautiful walking trail! Your voice matters! The county is still listening. There is a meeting tomorrow (Tuesday 01/16/24) where you can give your comment - these meetings are weekly on Tuesdays. If you have spoken before, feel free to reshare your message or focus on a particular point of interest. See the end of this message for how to comment tomorrow.

Also visit www.savetheleveetrail.org for more information on the project.

Just in case you missed last week's announcement here, following is a recap of what happened:

Despite your great follow-up with the Board of Commissioners (BOC) and the strength of this petition, a small but very vocal and aggressive pro-road group has formed over the past several months. Their tactics include badgering the BOC, lobbing accusations, and hijacking the public comment period of weekly commissioner meetings with their rhetoric.

Surprisingly, their efforts seem to have pushed the BOC into agreeing to a "compromise", which involves paving the entirety of this trail segment. An accommodation for a trail directly adjacent to the new two lane road is included, but it is uncertain if this trail will ever be included. This is not to mention the devastating affect this would have on any "trail" adjacent to a road with speeding. It would be a huge departure in the character we have now, and that goes without mentioned all the adverse environmental consequences of putting a road through this sensitive area.

Since the regular public comments of the pro-road group seem to have worked, we encourage support of the trail to provide comments in the same venue.

Speaking is limited to 3 minutes. If in person you walk up to the podium when the Commissioner asks if anyone wants to provide general public comment. If online you turn on your webcam and unmute at this same time when you would like to speak.

Feel free to use the whole 3 minutes, or if you do not like public speaking, even just saying something to the effect of: I would like the county not to put a paved road on top of this levee, and instead keep this a trail only and protect our environment. That would be VERY effective as well. Thank you for your help, we need it to save this trail!!
