Preserve and promote traditional indigenous games in the Philippines
The Issue
Growing up in the Philippines, my childhood was filled with the vibrant sounds of patintero, the exciting rush of luksong-baka, and the breathless anticipation of tumba-preso. These games weren't just pastimes; they were a crucial part of our cultural identity, teaching us teamwork, resilience, and the invaluable skill of improvisation. However, as technology shapes an ever-evolving world and video games and social media dominate the lives of our youth, these "Laro ng Lahi" games are slowly fading into oblivion.
It's time to preserve these crucial elements of our cultural heritage before they disappear entirely. Traditional games are more than just entertainment—they are a bridge to our ancestors, a way for us to pass down stories and values inherent to Filipino culture. They foster a sense of belonging and community, connecting families and bridging generational gaps. We owe it to future generations to protect and promote these indigenous games.
The first step towards reviving "Laro ng Lahi" is to incorporate them into the national education curriculum. By including these traditional games in physical education classes, we can ensure that every child in the Philippines experiences the magic and excitement they bring. Furthermore, local municipalities should spearhead yearly "Laro ng Lahi" festivals, creating a celebratory atmosphere that encourages families to participate and learn the rules and history of each game.
To sustain this initiative, I call upon the Department of Education, local government units, and cultural ministries to collaborate with communities and educators in creating informative booklets, online content, and workshops that emphasize the importance of these games. We should also encourage sponsorships from businesses, NGOs, and international cultural organizations to fund "Laro ng Lahi" competitions, showcasing these games at a national and international level.
Let's work together to preserve our heritage and ensure that "Laro ng Lahi" continues to thrive for generations to come. Sign this petition to show your support for protecting and celebrating our beloved traditional games.
