Change Animal Protection Laws & Regulations in Saskatchewan
The Issue
On the weekend of September 10, 2016, 14 large breed dogs being kenneled at Playful Paws Pet Center in Saskatoon, SK, were sent to their plastic crates in a windowless, overheating room. Overnight, while the dogs were unattended for 12 hours, temperatures rose to 37 degrees Celsius. With no way to escape, no supervision, and no safety procedures in place, all 14 dogs needlessly suffered and died. Since the incident, numerous former employees have come forward with statements and evidence indicating that the Office Manager and Owner of Playful Paws, as well as the Saskatoon SPCA had been made aware of issues at the facility. Unfortunately, due to our inadequate, ineffective, and archaic animal protection laws, there was next to nothing that the SPCA could do and the manager and owner were uninterested in making the recommended (but not required) changes. We need our laws and practices changed. Kennels are currently unregulated and are not subject to random inspections without a warrant as pet stores and shelters are. Please help the families heal by ensuring that no one else has to suffer as they have and get our laws stiffened and regulations placed on kennels. Condolences, peace, and love to the families.
