In early May, Mission-Matsqui-Fraser Canyon MP Jati Sidhu wrote a letter to the editor of the Lillooet News, stating, “I am pleased to note that CN has proposed conducting a feasibility study as a first step to determining the viability of re-establishing the rail passenger service. The study will have to look at an array of potential factors and scenarios.” This was exciting news and we held our breath for more news. But then on May 25th Editor Wendy Fraser reported that CN had emailed Marg Lampman, Lillooet’s mayor, and stated for the record they had “no plans to conduct a feasibility study”. Reading from the email, Mayor Lampman said CN said they had contacted Liberal MP Sidhu’s office to ask for his clarification. Lampman said, “I found it odd when I read that because CN has told me for the last two years they are not in the passenger train business and that we need to talk to VIA Rail, the Rocky Mountaineer, or someone else.” Clearly, despite the muddled communication among government and CN officials, this passenger train initiative has legs. We’re edging ever closer to 1000 signatures here and over at the Facebook page there are hundreds of Likes and shares--all this in one month! Keep getting the word out, please, and share share share!
