Regulation of Jet Skis - Help with Marine Safety Victoria

Hi All, Here we go again! Marine Safety Victoria has responded to community concerns and Council feedback with a lightweight draft waterway rule that does not help busy Bay beaches during the peak summer holiday period. However, Marine Safety is asking people to respond to a survey. Large numbers of people completing the survey is the only way Marine Safety will pay attention to what people are saying. It is a short survey and will only take 4-5 minutes. Closing date is 4 September 2019.
So, just click on https://engage.vic.gov.au/pwc-regulatory-reform
To help you through the survey are the following suggestions:
- Tick appropriate boxes in questions 1- 4.
- Then for question 5 click on all the options and where it says ‘other’ say – during peak summer periods due to the volume and constant intrusive noise restrict the hours of jet ski use
For question 6 - any other comments say:
- greater controls on the Mornington Peninsula (and around the Bay) are needed,
- more water police during the summer holiday period
- jet skis must be defined separately from boats in the marine safety regulations and under State legislation (currently they are defined as boats even though they are very different)
- restrict the number of jet ski licences (there are now more jet skis than boats)
- reinstate registration fees for jet skis (Premier Daniel Andrews has removed this fee)
- allocate jet skiers specific space well away from other water users and marine animals.
- feel free to add your own comments.
Then:
- Email the Minister for Fishing and Boating - jaala.pulford@parliament.vic.gov.au and cc to your local member. For the Nepean electorate, this is: chris.brayne@parliament.vic.gov
Tell them the draft jet ski rule put out by Marine Safety is not good enough and you want strict regulations for jet skiers put in place so the large majority can safely and peacefully enjoy the water and beach.
Mornington Peninsula Council has also put out a news item see - https://www.mornpen.vic.gov.au/About-Us/News-Media-Publications/News-Media/Shire-urges-residents-to-have-their-say-on-jet-skis
Volume of responses is the key to success with this one so please involve your family, friends, neighbours, acquaintances, local clubs, groups etc. People can respond even they don't live on the Peninsula as this is a Bay-wide issue.
Thank you & with your help, we will get there!
