Hi Supporters!
The SA Attorney-General, Hon. Kyam Maher, has responded to our letter, assuring us that the South Australian Government supports LGBTQA equality and is "of the view that no-one should be subject to harmful or ineffective therapies".
"In line with the governments commitment to ban conversion practices in South Australia, I am currently considering the models in place in various jurisdictions, including Victoria and New Zealand, with a view to developing our own legislation for consultation."
This is great news!
We know that the vast majority of conversion practices in Australia are occurring outside of therapeutic contexts (which is why Queensland's conversion practices legislation has been labelled as largely ineffective by survivors and LGBT advocates). I hope that through meeting with us (Amnesty International, SOGICE Survivors and Brave), the Attorney-General will see why legislation that is modelled after Victoria's will be most effective.
Thank you to all those who participated by sending their own letters! Your support has been much appreciated :)
Chris
