Hi Supporters,
In 2018 after the success of this petition, WA Health Minister Roger Cook voiced his opposition to conversion practices.
Following the recent ACT legislation, Greens MP Alison Xamon has voiced support for WA to enact legislation.
With the momentum following the recent laws in Queensland and ACT, this is the perfect opportunity for other states and territories to commit to working with survivors to develop quality strategies to deal with conversion practices in other parts of the country.
I want to be clear - what we want is commitment to an approach that adopts the SOGICE Survivor recommendations as it’s base. What we absolutely don’t want is for other states and territories to rush or ‘copy and paste’ the Queensland or ACT legislation in order to pass something quickly.
Nathan Despott, from survivor group Brave Network, said, “The national momentum on this issue means that WA is in a position to learn from the pros and cons of Bills in other states and to produce the best legislation in the country.”
Brave and SOGICE Survivors wish to support the Greens in calling for action in WA. Let’s keep sharing the petition and the SOGICE Survivor Statement to continue the momentum built!
I also want to share with you an article that I was asked to interview for. I don’t usually share these, but this one was a bit different. It was written by a journalism student, and it is his first article. He really listened and tried (and succeeded) to capture the key points during our conversation. He was very adamant that the piece should amplify survivor voices, rather than his. Please have a read :)
