Dear Supporters,
As you know, a campaign asking Australia’s largest booksellers to remove books promoting LGBTQA+ Conversion ideology by Joseph Nicolosi was started by Equality Australia several weeks ago. The campaign saw two titles removed from Amazon, Dymocks, and Angus & Robertson's systems.
While the removal of these two titles is a step forward, it should be noted that many other books have had significantly greater impact on LGBTIQA+ Australians over the past 20 years than two books by Joseph Nicolosi.
A list of 57 of the worst titles, developed by survivors from the Brave Network and SOCE Survivors with the support of Equality Australia, was subsequently sent to Readings, Dymocks and Angus & Robertson and Amazon Australia.
Nathan Despott of The Brave Network says that Readings has responded to this new list of titles, agreeing to remove them.
Managing Director of Readings, Mark Rubbo, said, “We, like many other sites, use a database of books in print to populate our site and certainly exercise no “editorial” control over this content. We do, of course, choose what we promote and publicise. You may have seen that we are heavily promoting Growing Up Queer in Australia and, together with the publisher, donated $2 for every copy sold in August to the charity Minus 18."
Material that promotes LGBTQA+ Conversion ideology is not illegal in Australia, and so for Readings to make a values-based decision like this is something to celebrate.
Companies are being asked to review the content of these books in conjunction with their company values to determine if they wish to keep selling them. Equality Australia has updated their campaign with the list of titles and is continuing to ask other bookstores to make an ethical decision to remove the books that are known to cause damage to LGBTIQ+ Australians and, in particular, young people.
