It is time for the rest of Australia’s states and territories to treat gay conversion seriously. Victoria’s state government is leading the way with The Age reporting last night plans for Victoria to conduct an inquiry into gay conversion therapy. Victorian Health Minister Jill Hennessy told The Age that Victoria has ‘zero tolerance’ for gay conversion. The Age reports “The inquiry will capture registered or unregistered counsellors, clinicians who treat homosexuality as a disorder, and anyone purporting to convert LGBTI people through therapeutic means. But it will also seek information on a more insidious trend: faith-based ministries and church figures who disguise their work as ‘spiritual guidance’.” With Shadow Health Minister Catherine King pledging Labor’s support for a change, and Queensland’s Health Minister Steven Miles also promising to look into how the issue can be addressed, we call on all Labor Health Ministers to vocalise their stance on gay conversion therapy.
