ALP makes commitment ahead of election
Apr 22, 2019 —
Really exciting news this morning!
Federal Labor has announced their commitment to tackling ‘conversion therapy’ through a ‘ban’ as well as other strategies, effectively making our cause an election issue.
Farrah Tomazin (The Age, SMH) reports:
“Federal Labor's announcement is the first time a federal party vying for government has made such a commitment, although much of the detail is yet to be developed.
"Policy documents to be released on Tuesday show that a Shorten government would work with survivor groups and the states and territories to develop strategies to end so-called conversion practices - including a nation-wide ban.”
The most welcome news is the fact that Labor is committed to working with survivors to develop a multifaceted response to the issue, rather than only passing legislation.
We have been asking our current Prime Minister and Health Minister to work with the states and territories to ban the practices of LGBT+ pseudo-therapies, as well as using the recommendations in the SOCE Survivor Statement to respond to the problem. As you know, PM Scott Morrison said it is “not an issue” for him.
Let's continue to show those in power that Australians want to see LGBT+ people respected in all areas of life. We want to see a strong response from our PM (or potentially our new one) in order to protect the LGBT+ community from something that is known to cause significant, lasting harm.
Now is the time to write to your local MP, PM Scott Morrison and Federal Health Min Greg Hunt, to let them know this issue is important to you. You can tweet the PM and ask him to denounce LGBT conversion therapy here.
Thank you, as always, for your continued support!
