Sub: Immediately remove patirachal and unconstitutional curfew from all women's hostel!
Over the past some years, women students across the country have been on the streets demanding the removal of discriminatory conditions, the caging and policing of their lives and now with BHU they have once again been brutally beaten up by the power of the state.
Yet, like BHU, many colleges, including Patiala Girls College, Sri Ram College of Commerce, Hindu College, Miranda House, Delhi Technological University have tried to "control the situation by extending the time. Some others have relaxed implementation of the rules for the time being. And a few such as Mumbai University, BITS Pilani, IIT Roorkee have set heartening examples by doing away with the patriarchal practice of imposing a curfew faced with the sharp questions of women students. Your own regulations dated 2nd May 2016 have declared restriction on women's mobility as unjustified for universities to impose. We describe the situation in so much detail to emphasise that CURFEWS ON WOMEN STUDENTS ARE NO MORE A UNIVERSALLY ACCEPTED NORM -- in fact over the past few years they stand UNIVERSALLY CHALLENEGED.
We state it emphatically yet again that the humiliating practice of imposing curfews on women students debars us from accessing basic university and social resources, violates our fundamental rights as citizens, infantilises us, is in direct conflict with our autonomy and mobility and is direct encouragement of those who commit public acts of sexual violence by making it appear as if women do not belong to the public space and must be punished when they venture into it. We have been stared at enough by these CCTV cameras promising safety, yet countless cases of stalking and violence have gone completely unadressed despite the many CCTV cameras! This attitude of protection has never and will not keep women safe. Women's safety can only come from women's liberaton and equality.
We have said it many times and declare it yet again, in not so feeble words, that our educational institutions must stop caging women!
No more curfews!
