Dear BSD Families,

It’s been a tumultuous week in terms of weather, and we hope that you and your family are safe. Many of our families and school staff have been without power/internet and have lost access to food resources. As we transition back to school and approach the end of the first semester and Final Opportunity Week at the high-school level, we need to consider these conditions.

In a standards-based system like ours, it's important for students to have a final opportunity to demonstrate their learning in each of their courses. However, with the upheaval caused this past week, many of our students and families have been unable to access their classes or their work.

Given the obstacles that many students have faced over the last week, we want families to know that no final opportunity assessments will negatively impact students’ final grades. In order to support our students, teachers will take a “do no harm” approach to ensure that final assessments can only help students’ grades.

Next week’s Final Opportunity Week schedule will be altered to allow for all classes to meet on Monday.  Each high school will follow up with their specific schedules for the week.

Monday, January 22 is a full day for all 8 classes to meet before final assessments begin on Tuesday.

The school day will start with 2nd period and then proceed to periods 4-6-8 followed by lunch.
After lunch, students will have a combination of periods 1-3-5-7.
Tuesday, January 23 is a half day with 65-minute finals for periods Advisory, 1 and 3.

Bus dismissal at 11:35 a.m. (Option Schools’ dismissal at 11:00 a.m.).
Wednesday, January 24 is a half day with 65-minute finals for periods 2, 4, and 6 or 8.

Bus dismissal at 11:35 a.m. (Option Schools’ dismissal at 11:00 a.m.).
Thursday, January 25 is a half day with 65-minute finals for periods Advisory, 5 and 7.

Bus dismissal at 11:35 a.m. (Option Schools’ dismissal at 11:00 a.m.).

In addition, we are extending the opportunity for students impacted by the weather closures to turn in classwork through Grading Day on Friday, January 26 at 11:30 a.m.

In some cases, due to the weather, there may be the need for students and families to work with their teachers on an Incomplete (I) mark for the semester. If outages and weather have impacted students’ ability to do ongoing work, students should reach out to their teachers. Those students would then work with their teachers to obtain a letter grade with additional time.

If your student needs additional support, please have them reach out to their teacher, counselor or administrator by emailing:  first name_last name@beaverton.k12.or.us

We’re here to support our students and families and hope everyone is safe.
