Let’s clear something up: precedent isn’t about the President or potatoes (though fries do make everything better).

Precedent = a legal decision that sets the example for future ones. And that’s exactly what’s at stake with the Portland Water Bureau’s filtration plant project.

It’s not just about this one project — it’s about the precedent it sets.

Think of zoning laws like a neighborhood rulebook. They decide what land can be used for — homes, farms, factories, etc. These laws are what keep your peaceful street from suddenly becoming home to a garbage dump.

Oregon’s zoning laws have protected farmland, forests, and our natural beauty for decades. The Urban Growth Boundary keeps the sprawl in check and the green spaces green.  

But here’s the problem…

If the Water Bureau gets permission to rezone rural land for industrial use, it opens the door for more of it — anywhere in Oregon. Once the precedent is set, it’s game on for future developers.

Why should you care? 

• Stops unchecked development on protected land
• Keeps deep-pocketed interests from buying their way around zoning
• Holds government accountable to the people, not politics

Even if this isn’t happening in your backyard, it still affects you — because

Oregon’s Land Use Board of Appeals sets the standard for the whole state.

So yeah… this matters. A lot.
