Help Hoboken Improve PATH Service

The Issue

Hoboken residents rely heavily on the PATH system to commute to work in Manhattan, as well as for recreational pursuits.  However, as Northern Jersey's population continues to grow, use of the PATH service has grown exponentially over the last five years, with the system carrying 82.8 million passengers, 283,719 daily in 2017.

Over the last 5 years, system-wide ridership during the morning (5-10a) and evening (3-7p) rush hours has increased by an average of 16 percent, causing trains to be overcrowded, especially on the Hoboken to 33rd Street line.  On weekends, both Hoboken and Jersey City share a line to and from 33rd Street, a service which is regularly overcrowded, despite fewer trains running through the system.

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) subway installed public Wifi system-wide in Jan 2017 to the benefit of their ridership, but PATH does not currently offer riders access to public Wifi.  This lack of access is often to the detriment of commuters looking to conduct business while on their way to work, or who wish to use the PATH app while underground.

This petition reinforces a unanimous resolution of the Hoboken City Council which was voted 9-0 on 17 September 2018, requesting the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey consider:

  • Running additional PATH trains between Hoboken and 33rd Street during weekday rush-hour periods to aid overcrowding.
  • Running separate PATH lines between Jersey City and Hoboken during peak periods over the weekends to aid overcrowding.
  • Installing public Wifi throughout the PATH system
