On November 18, 1978, in the isolated jungles of South America, cult leader Jim Jones ordered the deaths of over 300 innocent children, including 40 infants, trusting American families, the assassination of Congressman Leo Ryan, and his UPI news team. Although I was never a member our family lost 27 loved ones including my beloved mother, the youngest child 2-month-old Charles Garry Henderson.

“Push for Change, Erase His Name”

Our grandmother, Mrs. Julia Gales, was Jones's first Black member to join Peoples Temple in San Francisco. She recruited many families and friends from across the country. Later, it was our grandmother, who identified - with unbearable screams - the names of our relatives when they scrolled down on the news. From that day to now, the Jones family and church members have caused our memorial services and efforts constant problems to give the innocent victims a dignified memorial. I do not have the money, staff, nor time to fight a cult, but they do.

The residents of Jonestown, Guyana were BRAVE PIONEERS and selfless heroes. Our loved ones went for a Better Day, Better Life, and Better Place for you and I. It has been a painful journey to date reliving Jonestown every year seeing his name before us on top of our loved ones. We are appreciative that last year in 2023 Madame Vice President Kamala Harris honored our 45th Jonestown Memorial with a Recognition and support years before. It is healing for those who are still hurting.

The congregants of Peoples Temple were the cream of the crop. But their megalomaniac ego-driven leader played on their fears of poverty, lynching, and murders in the Black community. He duped them into believing in him. He lied with a fully laid out plan just like Hitler. His plan succeeded because Blacks were tired of having their blood drench this land with little or nothing being done about it. America was built off the backs of their ancestors, yet, they were experiencing inequality, injustice, murders, racial profiling, and more. 

Jones family and loyalist supporters schemed with Evergreen Cemetery owner Buck Kamphausen to add James Warren Jones aka Jim Jones on top of the mass gravesite of almost 300 innocent children lying beneath us today. He is still lord over the innocent Children, faithful families, investigating Congressman and his team all of whom he ordered to be murdered in cold blood amidst horror and mayhem. They did not die willingly. They were murdered and surrounded by guards with crossbows and gunmen. They didn’t drink the Kool-Aid willingly and scores were chased and injected in their backs. They were held at gunpoint and ordered to drink or be shot alongside of their children, Generation X.

The plaques that you see covered today were inscribed by Evergreens monument maker, who begged not to do this deplorable job.. Jones is not buried here. It is like reliving a second Jonestown. Jones said that his father, James Thurman Jones was a Wizard in the Ku Klux Klan, and that he did not agree with his dad. But Jim Jones named his revolutionary suicide, “White Nights.” The White Knights of the Ku Klux Klan is a Ku Klux Klan (KKK) organization that is active in the United States. It was the most ruthless organization of the Jim Crow era. The White Knights were responsible for many bombings, church burnings, beatings, and murders that killed three Civil Rights members of CORE.

Jones's favorite statement was, “You will never forget me.” We may never forget him, but you can help us remove his name and remember the innocent victims of which more than 300 were Children and Forty (40) infant caskets lay buried under Jim Jones's name in Evergreen Cemetery. Push for CHANGE, Erase His Name, Honoring him is disgraceful. This should not be. His outrageous family and followers have no shame and stated that he deserves to be there because he is a part of History. They are trying to dupe the public and surviving families under the guise of forgiveness just like their fallen leader. Hitler is a part of History the Columbine killers and 9/11 terrorists are part of history, but none of their names disgrace their memorials or insult the victims and families.
