The issue

Recently I found an injured / neglected dog on the footpath near a Shopping Centre. The dog had burns to 60% of its body and no fur on its back. Being a cattle dog I was wary to approach the dog however the boy was in such pain he sought out kindness. I lifted him into my car and took him to the Animal Emergency Hospital. They checked him over and he had a microchip so the Nurses phoned the owner.....  however as the owner had been drinking he asked if I could take the dog to his address. I begged for the dog to be given pain relief and said I would pay prior to them giving him pain relief. As I was not the owner of the dog I had no rights. Not even to pay for pain relief.

I was told as I was not the owner of the dog I had no rights. I was given two choices:

a. Take the dog back to the abusive owner; or

b. take the dog to the RSPCA overnight cages. The overnight cages were clean and warm and had food and water so I left him there.

The next day I rang the RSPCA and the staff were quite distraught. The owner would not surrender the dog so he had him euthanized. The dog would have made a lovely pet once healed and the RSPCA would have treated the dog free of charge if the dog was surrendered.

1. Animals need more rights. They need to have immediate pain relief if they are or are not micro chipped. This should be compulsory for all Veterinary Practitioners.

2. A dog should not be euthanized if the dog can be treated. A person should not have the choice to have their dog euthanized if the dog can be surrendered to the RSPCA, treated and re homed. This should be a criminal offence.

Please help our precious animals that do not have a voice.
