Essex Families United for Statutory Public Inquiry Call.
A coalition of charities, MPs and health experts has joined calls for a statutory public inquiry into the deaths of dozens of people at NHS mental health facilities in Essex.
Some 66 families have written again to mental health minister Nadine Dorries calling for a change to the independent investigation announced by the Government into failings that have accounted for the deaths of more than 30 people. They want to have a statutory public inquiry, which would compel witnesses to testify under oath, and are refusing to co-operate with the Government’s plan.
The campaign is being led by Melanie Leahy, who lost her son Matthew in November 2012 while he was in the care of Essex mental health services. Despite numerous investigations, some of which are ongoing, no one has been held accountable for his death.
