Saturday night in Minneapolis, MN two officers went to a home where the home alarm had been accidentally set off by one of the resident teens upon returning home. The officers went to the house, one to the front, and one to the back, and the officer in the backyard climbed a 7 foot fence and was greeted by the two family dogs. As the dogs approached, he shot them both. The 13 year old girl who had just returned with her 18 year old sister, saw the entire incident out the window, and it was also recorded on security video cameras in the backyard.
For months I have been reading and hearing news stories of violence in our city, and unnecessary use of force by our police officers. My husband and I are also civil servants, teachers serving the youth of our community. Hearing about the latest shooting of two innocent dogs in North Minneapolis is not only heart-breaking, but the proverbial “straw that has broken the camel’s back” for me. I work at a school on Lake Street for under-resourced youth. My husband teaches at a high school. We have four children ages 17-23. We need to know that not only our family is safe, but our greater Minneapolis family is safe from police fire. We, the police, the teachers, and the citizens of Minneapolis, are all servants for the community. We are here to make sure everyone is healthy, learns, and is safe, including our beloved pets. We just lost our dog of 15 years, and they are dear family members.
I beg you, Police Chief Harteau and Mayor Betsy Hodges, with the utmost respect, please talk to and train your officers to be more compassionate, and PUT THEIR GUNS AWAY. I would think there are very few times where their own lives are at danger and they need to shoot. Please protect everyone and everything in our community.
