"Why I am Voting YES To RECALL The School Board"
Troy Sutton
With the upcoming recall election to remove the members of the school board, I wanted to share why I'm voting in favor of having them removed.
1) I feel they failed to communicate with the public and represent us with the boundary changes.
2) They failed to represent the voters and get public input with regards to the Pocatello mascot.
3) Their shut down of the schools and handling of COVID didn't represent the people
All of these topics have been greatly disputed and discussed. Here are some items that aren't being talked about but are possibly even more important than any of those that I have previously mentioned.
1) In the future and upcoming school year, how will this school board handle COVID policy and the possibility of closing schools? (Given their current and previous actions they won't hesitate to keep the schools in the hybrid or virtual models indefinitely.) I'm not ok with that.
2) If not removed now in March, what preparations will they make over the summer to be ready for school in the fall? (Looking at their preparations over this past year, they did little if anything to prepare. We didn't even know until a few weeks before school started if we would be in person or virtual. Even after having gone in the hybrid model for a couple months, the board members were clueless as to what was going on. Even now after 6 months, the learning is minimal and very little improvements are being made. I realize that hindsight is 20/20 and we were all learning; however, we were very ill prepared and given their track record, I don't feel comfortable having them make the same poor decisions for our students and families in coming months.)
3) I'm sure that with the growth that our area is experiencing, it won't be long before discussions will need to be made regarding the building of a new school or overcrowding of schools. Given the boards handling of these past issues, do I want them to be making important decisions like that? No way. They did a horrible job previously and I expect they'd do a similar job on future decisions.
4) Can't we just keep the current board members and wait until November until they are up for re-election? No way. A change in the school board members will be somewhat of a disruption at any time, but there's no way it can wait until November. We are experiencing significant issues in our school district and now is the time for change. We need this time now and the summer months to make adjustments and the necessary preparation. Waiting until the middle of the school year is the worst time. NOW is when change and leadership is needed!
We will be unprepared again this upcoming school year.
We will have endless hybrid and virtual learning.
Sports and activities will continue to be cancelled.
We as students and parents will continue to not have a voice.
The past is in the past and we can't change it. The future is yet to be seen. I know how the current school board will act in the future because they have proven it by their actions in the past. We need a better future for our school district. Our community deserves better, and our kids and students deserve better. If you agree with me we need to get out and vote on March 9th to remove them.
