Please Stop the Sale of Guinea Pigs in Pet Stores
The Issue
Operating a guinea pig rescue in Brevard County, Florida, has opened my eyes to a worrying trend. The overwhelming majority of guinea pigs that end up in our care are abandoned by people who purchased them from pet stores. Approximately 90% of the intake messages I receive come from people who bought these animals from retailers, only to later decide they no longer want them. This heartbreaking pattern is compounded by pet stores’ notorious practices of providing inaccurate care information, misgendering the animals, and selling cages that are far too small, resulting in seriously compromising the health of guinea pigs.
The dead end for these animals often begins with people wanting to “rescue” guinea pigs from pet stores, purchasing them out of sympathy because they're incorrectly housed or sickly. Many people purchase them for small children, on impulse, or as inappropriate companions for their current guinea pig. They are then surrendered for reasons like, "they are not small anymore," "we just got two puppies and it's just too much," "we're expecting our second child," "our priorities have shifted," or "my kids lost interest and are not taking care of them." Ironically, some of the biggest proponents of banning the sale of guinea pigs in pet stores are these very same people.
A particularly concerning issue notorious in pet stores is the misidentification of the guinea pigs' gender, often resulting in unintentional breeding. This not only exacerbates the problem of unwanted pets, but it also places a further burden on rescue organizations.
It is time for a change toward banning the sale of guinea pigs in pet stores throughout Florida and increasing adoptions of the many guinea pigs already in need of homes. Potential owners would be driven towards rescues, where they would receive proper guidance on guinea pig care.
I urge you to stand with me in advocating for a ban on the sale of guinea pigs in pet stores. Together, we can implement a significant change that protects these vulnerable animals and promotes responsible pet ownership.
