The issue
The regularity of murders cross Australia within the family home is on the rise. Why aren't these reported? Why is this issue still largely ignored my mainstream media? And when they are reported why isn't the correct language used?
People don't think these crimes occur in our backyard but the truth is it DOES, and with an average of 2 deaths per week this is happening in our cities, our towns and our neighborhood.
When a man or woman is allegedly killed/murdered by their partner/husband/wife/girlfriend/boyfriend the media either doesn't report it, doesn't report the regularity of the crimes or skirts around the language needed to report these stories accurately.
I started this petition because I was sick to the stomach of listening, or reading, news reports about violent alleged murders in a domestic scenario, being spoken of as "tragic deaths" or "died at the hands of." Language is so important in the way we process social issues so let us ask News Producers to pay attention to the news scripts and print stories that get ok'ed and to use the language that best describes this type of crime - ALLEGED MURDER.
In a world where we are already desensitised so much, please don't lessen the murder/deaths of these women and men by just saying "killed by" or "died at the hands of". As a viewer the word 'murder' is a shocking and scary word, something we tend not to think occurs in our back yard, that reality is too confronting. However with over 38 murders so far in 2015, IT IS HAPPENING in our own backyard and we need to stand up for these victims by using the most appropriate word for how they died - MURDER. So why not call it as it is. I do understand that the word "alleged" must also be used as we still live in a world where the accused is innocent until proven guilty, so let's use the words "alleged murder" or "alleged murderer".
