Hi all, I/we wanted to let you know that we now have 80 signatures on this petition, and we want to give our huge thanks to all of you. Your support is very much valued.
We also need to let you know/remind you that on 15th October the County Council’s Assets and Procurement Committee will decide the future of the former Mill Road Library.
The County Council officers are treating this building purely as an item t to be sold on the commercial market. Which would lose it to the community forever. We need to be able to demonstrate to the County Council that there is a large volume of support to keep this much-loved former Library, and listed building, and registered an ‘Asset of Community Value’ to serve the Mill Road community.
So, please, we need many more people to register support so that we can influence this County Council meeting on 15th October.
Matthew Webb who is leading the Community Bid for the Old Library is quoted in today’s “Cambridge Independent” : “Selling Library to developers would be “imagination failure” (2nd October, page 120. £450,000 has been pledged by local people, and the Architectural Heritage Fund have offered a loan of up to £1 million. This does make the Arts Community Bid one that is financially credible, but we still have to convince the County Councillors.
My wife and I have a letter “Library can help heal the Mill Road divisions” on page 26 of the same paper. The local community has been ripped apart by County Council proposals for a bus gate, on the bridge right by the Old Library. County Councillors will be making this difficult decision this Friday (4th October). Whichever way they decide, a large part of the community will be alienated. IF the Community bid for the Old Library is successful, this would be a focus for bringing together our currently, sadly divided community.
We urgently need more support to convince the County Council that the future of the former Library is a vital COMMUNITY issue.
Would you help me get more signatures by sharing this petition with ten other people on social media? Facebook groups, SMS chats, Twitter, email and WhatsApp all work well. If more of us sign, we can’t be ignored! There is a new link change.org/MillRoadLibrary
Thanks again for supporting this cause.
