Petition updateGive people with cognitive disability a fair go in the justice systemWe have won the Justice Matters campaign!
Council for Intellectual Disability
Jun 2, 2021
Today the Attorney General announced $28 million over four years for the Justice Advocacy Service and a new diversion program. You can read all about it in today’s Sydney Morning Herald on the attached article. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for helping us to push forward and win this campaign. We only succeeded because of your help! This means there will be expert advocates there to continue to support people with cognitive disabilities at court or at police stations. Going to court is scary but having an advocate helps you to understand what is happening and feel calmer. It is also good that the Attorney General will be funding a new diversion program. This means people will get support rather than going to jail. Jail is not a good place for people with cognitive disability. I am so glad that people with cognitive disability will get the opportunity to benefit from these programs. A very sincere thank you from me and the CID team. Justen Thomas
