Michael Reynolds' post on our FB page (copied below) accurately summarises CHL's priorities. The shameful decision of CHL's trustees to give away their Shire Horses rather than cull their overpaid Executives reeks of ineptitude. Tell them what you think of their priorities to retain the services of Dr. Gillian Dow, a vastly over-paid librarian, rather than their iconic Shire Horses (Royston;. Speedy; Isaac & Summer.) 'Having carried out a bit of research I understand there is a cost of having the horses at Chawton House however the CEO takes £70k plus a year out of the charity! The horses were the heartbeat of Chawton and were a living reminder of Jane Austin lifestyle, and how we later relied on such heavy horse's especially during the 1st World War and how we let them down slaughtering 10,000's when it was over... removing them from Chawton based on the cost in comparison to the CEO fee seems no different. We have a duty to support these magnificent creatures and not let them just become pictures in history books. Books can be digitally recorded for all to read but you can't pet or take in the pleasure of the horses from a picture. Therefore I support the cause to reinstate the horses and let Chawton House's heartbeat once again and I will happily make a monthly donation to the support them.
