It's been a while.....a long while, but I can confirm that we have received correspondence from the Standing Committee on Environment and Public Affairs after this matter was tabled at the Parliament of Western Australia, and I quote; "The Minister for Agriculture and Food, Hon Alannah MacTiernan MLC, who is responsible for administration of the Act, informed the Committee that amendments to the Act regarding national Animal Welfare Standards and Guidelines will be introduced in the near future. In addition, work in relation to the implementation of recommendations stemming from the Easton Review 2015 is ongoing and will include consideration of the need for further review and reform". I have since received correspondence from MacTiernan's office that the review will occur in 2018, although the exact date has not been specified. A review of the WA Animal Welfare Act 2002 is just one part of this petition, the other is that the range of penalties it stipulates is enforced. The Attorney General of Western Australia has pointed out that penalties for acts of animal cruelty under the Act are amongst the highest in Australia 'with up to five years imprisonment', but if none of the many animal cruelty crimes in WA since 2002 (when the Act came into effect) have been deemed brutal enough for the judiciary to enforce even close to this maximum (more like the minimum), then the wording of the Act no doubt needs to be strengthened so that it cannot be misconstrued. An announcement seeking public opinion on the review of the WA Animal Welfare Act 2002 will be made on the DAFWA (now part of the larger Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development-DPIRD) website, so it's really important that people make comment, voice their opinions on the Act and the changes they would like to see.
