Hello supporters:
Earlier this year, permission was granted for development and, as of last month the site has been mostly dug up with heavy machinery. However, the fight is not over yet!
A group of dedicated people are pushing for the publication of the archaeological reports of the site, as this is an obligation under national and European legislation. This would also be a great victory for heritage management in Malta and in Europe.
The second goal is to ensure the presence of an archaeologist to monitor all excavation of this site.
The third goal is to ensure that open spaces are safeguarded for the wellbeing of all.
We will be organising two awareness raising campaigns on the 16 December:
in Mosta Square between 10:00 and 13:00;
in de Valette Square, Valletta between 16:00 and 19:00.
For more information on our current awareness campaigns, events and talks, follow Malta ARCH on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/MaltaARCH17/).
You may also check out Temple Rescue (https://www.facebook.com/Templerescuemalta/?fref=ts), a page dedicated to raising awareness on the lessor known sites in Malta.
Please also take the time to send an email to the following stakeholders, respectfully voicing your concern:
The Superintendence of Cultural Heritage: heritage.superintendence@gov.mt
H.E. President of Malta: president@gov.mt
Hon. Prime Minister of Malta: joseph.muscat@gov.mt
Hon. Minister for Justice, Culture and Local Government: owen.bonnici@gov.mt
Planning Authority: representations@pa.org.mt
Suggested wording to be sent:
I am writing as a concerned citizen regarding the development going on at tal-Qares in Mosta. I understand that development is a national requirement, but we encourage all decision-makers to ensure that:
the archaeological report for tal-Qares is made public at the earliest;
the ongoing works are monitored by an archaeologist;
discussions are held regarding the protection of Malta’s open spaces for the well-being of all.
Please continue to share this update petition to help protect this site and other future sites.
