Were you aware that Illinois has 26,000 miles of paddleable rivers, more than any state east of the Mississippi River? Were you also aware that only a small percentage of these rivers are legally open to public use?

Under current Illinois law paddlers could potentially be cited for trespassing on most Illinois rivers. The State of Illinois is considering House Bill 1568 which would guarantee paddlers’ rights. This new law would ensure any Illinois river navigable by recreational watercraft for a substantial part of the year will be open to public access and use.
