Jennifer Link started this petition to Pine Ridge High and

This petition is on behalf of Shannon a senior at Pine Ridge High School in Deltona, FL.

As Shannon entered Pine Ridge for the first time during Freshmen Night, she spoke with the current Miss Pine Ridge and she was happy to share her story of success, “participate in as many activities and join as many groups as you can to have a complete high school experience.” Shannon took those words to heart. She tried out for the volleyball team and made libero for the Pine Ridge Junior Varsity team, she applied for a Student Government Association (SGA) officer position and became secretary, and she continued her involvement with Relay for Life and became the Pine Ridge student ambassador.

During her Sophmore year, Shannon was named SGA historian, joined Earth First while taking AP Environmental Science and competed in the Envirothon, placing 2nd overall. She made starting varsity position on her volleyball team and became captain her Junior year. During her Junior year she became a member of National Honors Society, Science National Honors Society and continued her role of SGA historian. She was named Miss Pine Ridge runner up at the end of her Junior year.

Shannon was also a member of the Vet Program at Pine Ridge her Freshman to Senior year and joined Future Farmers of America (FFA) where she participated in several CDE competitions, some of which made it to a State Level. She coached volleyball for the YMCA her Sophmore to Senior year, and continued to be the student ambassador for Relay for Life.

As Shannon approached her senior years, she took on many more difficult positions. She became the SGA student class president and had to oversee every production associated with SGA, she was the Liason officer for the NHS, working many hours volunteering and communicating with members, and she became the Volleyball Manager taking stats and running plays alongside the coach. She was also attending classes at Daytona State College while working 30+ hours a week at Texas Roadhouse.

Halfway through Shannon’s Junior year of the Vet Program, she discovered she would not be able to receive her Vet Assisting certification because the teacher was not certified to teach the class due to FLorida regulations. Shannon was devastated. She learned she needed to accumulate 500 hours of volunteer time in a vets office, train in over 30 skills under a Vet’s supervision, take a 9 month online course and sit for the certification. Shannon was determined she would meet these requirements before the end of her senior year. She took it upon herself to seek out a qualified Vet CLinic and began an internship at the Pine Ridge Animal Hospital to try and satisfy her Vet Program requirements for certification. This was just too much on Shannon with all the other obligations she had. After careful consideration, Shannon decided her involvement with her school clubs was more important than her certification, so she dropped her internship to focus on SGA and NHS activities.

Shannon has maintained a 4.3 GPA while taking 6 AP classes and 4 Daytona State courses. She has never been in trouble or received a referral once in all her 13 years of schooling. This is why it was so shocking that on April 10, 2019 ,while in class, Shannon used her phone with the supervising teacher’s permission to record another student making an inappropriate sign, which she posted on her SPAM social media account. An account she learned about creating through a teen suicide panel she worked on with Volusia County Schools. It was told they should post on this account events going on in their lives that they don’t want everyone to see. Shannon  received a Level 3 Tampering referral, but after an appeal was dropped to a a Level 2 telecommunications device referral.  Due to this referral, Shannon has now been removed from her officer positions at Pine Ridge, isolated by the mentors she looked up to, she is no longer allowed to give the SGA class president speech at graduation, she is not allowed to wear her stoles to which she earned the past four years and she will most likely not be considered to be in the hall of fame (which she has worked so hard to achieve). This is the student that was voted most outgoing by her senior class representatives. All of her hard work has been stripped away less than a month before graduation. My heart is breaking for this beautiful, talented, hard working student that always made Pine RIdge a priority over everything else in her life, including her social life.

We are asking for fair treatment of this situation. We are asking that all aspects and Shannon’s history be taken into account. Shannon and her mom are going through the grievance process but we are running out of time. Shannon understands it was a bad decision to post and has apologized to the school principal. Due to the nature of this classroom this was a normal way of life for the students present, so she really didn’t understand how it may upset other people. It was not posted out of anger or malice but rather a “look at another day of no learning in this class”.

I am asking all of you to please sign this and share as much as you can. Let’s make Pine Ridge High and the Volusia County Schools Leadership re-evaluate this situation for Shannon. I will attest to this child’s character any day!! She is a true leader who has carried herself with grace during this terrible situation.
