House Committee on Health nods Bayan Muna proposal of increased dialysis treatment coverage for indigent patients

The consolidated Comprehensive Renal Replacement Therapy (RRT) bill which failed to get enacted in the last congress, got the approval of the Committee on Health of the 18th Congress yesterday.

Bayan Muna Party-list solons Rep. Carlos Zarate and Rep. Ferdinand Gaite, authors of one of the versions consolidated into the bill, welcomed the approval of the proposed measure and of their amendment of increasing the minimum hemodialysis sessions covered by PhilHealth from 90 to 156 a year or up to 3 sessions a week.

Bayan Muna Rep. Carlos Zarate welcomed the approval of the ammendment which he said would greatly help ease the burden of poor patients.

“Nais nating mabawasan kundi man mawala ang cash out lalo na ng mahihirap nating kababayan na nagpapa-dialysis, as very few people can afford the cost of the treatment which is around P25,000 to P46,000," Rep. Zarate said in a statement Wednesday.

The Bayan Muna solons also introduced ammendments that would mandate PhilHealth to cover free erythropoietin injections.

Erythropoietin injections are currently not covered by PhilHealth.

"We hope that the Senate soon approves their counterpart bill and that this measure gets enacted immediately especially that there is a general reduction in the allocations of social services including health in the 2020 budget," said Rep. Gaite.
