Dear Representative Phil Shepard,
I, Sheree Rose Castro, respectfully request your assistance as our honorable representative on behalf of Great Spirit Pow Wow Center in Richlands, North Carolina to advocate for the Coharie people to become a Federally Recognized Native American Indian tribe. I am inspired to help these beautiful people after attending the 48th annual Coharie Pow Wow in Clinton North Carolina, who will soon be bringing their cultural ceremonies and traditions to our center in Onslow County.
This tribe descends from the aboriginal tribe of the Neusiok Indians and the Carolina Iroquoian Tuscarora nation. They have resided in North Carolina since the 1700's and have lived continuously as an Indian tribe. The Coharie community consists of four settlements: Holly Grove, New Bethel, Shiloh, and Antioch. Their churches are the focus of the Coharie Peoples' religious activities where families interact, elders are honored, and social rules are enforced. The Coharie Indian Tribe has been recognized by the state of North Carolina since 1971.
Rev. Chief Wilbert -Strong Spirit- Ammons is a lifelong resident and outstanding member of the Coharie Tribal Community. Rev. Ammons is known as a modern-day warrior who has worked hard throughout his life to assure that Indians, Veterans, and All Man-kind are treated fairly. He has born on September 23, 1922 and will celebrate his 95th birthday this year. Rev. Ammons is one of the few living Native American Indians to serve in the armed forces during World War II as he served our country from 1939 until 1945. Rev. Ammons has also been a minister for 65 years.
I want to thank you, Representative Phil Shepard, and your assistant, Pamela Pate, for helping our community as well as serving our citizens. I know you can advocate for Great Spirit Pow Wow center to ensure that these beautiful people of the Coharie Indian tribe get the recognition that is long overdue and so deserved. Federal recognition for the Coharie tribe will be the best way to honor Rev. Chief Wilbert-Strong Spirit-Ammons for serving our country. God Bless. Sincerely, Rev.Sheree Rose Townsend Castro-Founder Great Spirit Pow Wow Center and Sincerely Rev. Debra Earthbearwoman Locklear
