On Tuesday, May 4th, Governor Murphy announced a new executive order "moving up the effective date of the reopening steps . . . which were to have come into effect on May 10th." He remarked that "they are all moved up to this Friday, May 7th," and during this announcement, he stated that "for those of you who are having your prom this weekend, let it be said that we heard you." The action Governor Murphy took is a direct result of this petition and the support that you provided. Not only did you help push for dancing at proms, you contributed to the end of prohibitions and limits on restaurants and businesses. These eased guidelines for restaurants, bars, and events will come into effect three days earlier, meaning they can begin to be enacted right in time for the weekend. While my high school in Montgomery, NJ made the decision to push prom back to May 14th (doing so before Governor Murphy's May 4th executive order, so that we would be ensured the opportunity to dance), it is still huge that the Governor responded to our request. This can benefit schools across New Jersey who have prom this weekend and did not have the capacity to change it to a later date like mine did, and it can benefit several businesses across the state that can now ease restrictions over the weekend. The change from May 10th to May 7th might seem minor. However, it can make a difference. And it is proof that when we voice our opinions, we can make real change. We can hold our elected leaders accountable and correct them when they do not put enough thought into their decisions and select arbitrary enactment dates. I am honored that Governor Murphy responded to our ask, and I truly appreciate the executive action he took, showing that he hears us. I am looking forward to enjoying my prom on the 14th and am incredibly grateful for your contribution to this effort.
