Victoria’s struggle to retain police officers has reached a tipping point, and the promise to boost numbers by recruiting thousands from overseas may sound like decisive action. But is it really addressing the problem—or merely papering over deeper cracks? As concern about public safety grows, so too does unease about the true causes of the police exodus and whether expensive overseas recruitment is a solution, or simply a politically convenient distraction. 

This article challenges the assumption that the answer lies offshore. It argues that the real crisis is closer to home: flawed recruitment processes, costly barriers for local applicants, ineffective management, and a failure to value and retain experienced officers. Before millions are spent abroad, shouldn’t Victoria fix what’s broken within its own system?
