By declaring on May 23, 2018, that those NFL players who choose not to stand, and instead kneel during the playing of the National Anthem “maybe shouldn’t be in the country,” President Trump demonstrated his contempt and disrespect for the First Amendment’s protections of free speech and the right of citizens to peacefully protest against wrongs that they perceive in our political system. 46. By claiming that an investigation by federal law enforcement into Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election constituted instead “spying” on his election campaign, President Trump deliberately and falsely distorted the facts, seeking to make it appear that he was the victim of interference with his campaign, when the facts are entirely to the contrary and it is well-established that there was massive Russian interference seeking to assist in his election.
