TL;DR: An uncleared volunteer worked with Redwood Middle School students in 2024–25. Families demand clear answers, real accountability, and concrete safeguards—student safety cannot be treated as a “gap.”

Dear Saratoga Community,

We are sharing this update to refocus attention on the core issue that brought many of us together: student safety, transparency, and accountability within the Saratoga Union School District.

As publicly acknowledged by the Saratoga Union School District, a volunteer participated in Redwood Middle School after-school activities during the 2024–2025 school year without completing required clearance procedures. The district has stated that a third-party investigation is underway to examine how this lapse occurred.

We support a thorough and independent review. At the same time, families reasonably seek clarity about three critical areas:

1. Scope
What specific questions is the investigation examining? Does it include how the lapse occurred, what oversight mechanisms failed, and what corrective measures will be implemented?

2. Timeline
While we understand the importance of allowing investigators to complete their work without interference, families are asking whether an anticipated timeframe for public reporting can be shared.

3. Implementation
Once findings are issued, will corrective actions and safeguards be accompanied by clear implementation timelines and oversight mechanisms?

Our goal is not to pre-judge outcomes, but to ensure that the process results in durable safeguards.

Communication and Access
During the January Redwood Middle School PTA general meeting, a parent asked the superintendent whether he would host dedicated parent and family office hours. While he noted that there are existing forums for family engagement, he ultimately stated that additional office hours would not be scheduled. During periods of heightened concern, structured opportunities for open dialogue can play an important role in building trust and maintaining transparent communication.

At the February, 2026 board meeting, a community member also raised concerns about the ability to file complaints anonymously. The superintendent stated that anonymous reporting is available. The district website has since clarified that anonymous complaints may be submitted. However, the current process still requires families to request forms via email or in person, rather than offering a direct downloadable submission option.

When families have expressed hesitation about coming forward, ease of access and clarity in reporting procedures matter. Transparent, accessible systems are essential components of safety.

Our Continued Focus
This petition exists for one purpose:

To ensure that ALL the facts surrounding this confirmed clearance lapse are fully disclosed, that accountability measures are clearly communicated, and that concrete safeguards — with defined implementation steps — are put in place to prevent recurrence.

We recognize and appreciate the many educators and staff who serve students with dedication every day. Strengthening systems and oversight protects their work as much as it protects our children.

We will continue to follow the public process, review official communications, and advocate for transparency and clear corrective action. Student safety must remain the district’s highest priority.
