Thank you for reaching out and for sharing the petition and the concerns raised by residents and business owners. I appreciate everyone who has taken the time to engage on this issue.
Late-night food vendors play an important role in Uptown by supporting small businesses, providing affordable food options for residents, visitors, hospitality workers, and first responders, and contributing to a vibrant street environment.
At the same time, Charlotte Center Partners manages the vendor program on behalf of the City, and in coordination with CMPD has temporarily restricted vendor operations after midnight. This decision was made in response to an increase in late-night violence, much of which has occurred after bars close. The goal of the temporary adjustment is to improve public safety while CMPD works to address these challenges.
Importantly, this is not intended to be a permanent policy. Charlotte Center Partners is currently reviewing the vendor program's operating guidelines and evaluating opportunities to modernize the program and its footprint. They are also continuing to monitor nightlife activity and public safety trends alongside CMPD and Uptown stakeholders to determine the most appropriate path forward.
I recognize that both public safety and supporting small businesses are priorities for our community. I will continue to encourage collaboration among Charlotte Center Partners, CMPD, vendors, and other stakeholders so that any long-term decisions are informed by data, community input, and the needs of our Center City.
