Another unfortunate update associated with the 1174 Folsom project. Bay of Burma employees were robbed on Wednesday evening at appropriately 840pm. We believe the robbers were armed as they violently threatened the hard working staff. The good news is everyone is safe. However, the staff is visibly shaken. Co-owners Kay and Ryan represent the best of the best in this country. But this chapter represents another material blow, on top of a devastating 3 month period for their dream restaurant.
Please note that the restaurant is located at the ground floor of 1174 Folsom. Bay of Burma held their soft opening first week of May. Coincidentally the same week when we were all notified of the highly controversial 1174 Folsom via a nondescript flyer.
Despite multiple requests, no city official has visited Bay of Burma to address the adverse impact of 1174 project . We have asked Supervisor Dorsey and his staff multiple times. We have all reached out to Mayor Breed and her community liaison with a similar request. We, the neighbors, made the time to show up to Bay of Burma and see if they were okay. It's not about if you have time, the question is do you make time for what is important. Need to stop making excuses and hold everyone accountable.
On July 13th we also sent an email which tells the Bay of Burma story. It is heartbreaking and there was no response from City Hall or elected officials. And now this episode. Small businesses are the lynchpin of the Soma West neighborhood. We must have their back. We gotta stop taking steps backward.
Feel free to share this story. 1174 Folsom Proposal + Process was full of strategic errors, but it has mobilized our neighborhood.
Either way, make sure you visit Bay of Burma this week + show your support for small businesses who lack city support.
