Just a quick reminder about today's neighborhood walk and the key intentions behind it. We want to ensure that our voices are heard and our concerns addressed. Here's a summary of what we aim to highlight during the walk:
- Lack of Safety on Our Block: We will walk and draw attention to the pressing safety issues within our immediate neighborhood, particularly the presence of drug dealers. While establishing transitional housing for young adults (TAY) may not directly impact safety, we firmly believe that the first priority should be addressing the existing safety concerns. We will advocate for the Police Department captain to focus on solving this issue, and until staffing levels improve, we cannot support additional housing projects. Additionally, we will express our dissatisfaction with the slow response times from the police, even when 911 is called.
- High Density of Existing Housing Projects: Our block already has a significant number of housing projects. We will highlight the excessive concentration of such projects specifically on our block, emphasizing that we are carrying more than our fair share. We will question why we should continue to support citywide efforts when our own community is already burdened.
- Unresolved Issues and TAY Population: We will raise questions about the whereabouts of the 600 transitional-age youth (TAY) in the area. If the existing issues on our block are not being resolved, why should we bear the additional burden of supporting San Francisco's wider homelessness issues? We will emphasize the need to address our immediate concerns before taking on more responsibilities.
- Discrepancies in Building Usage: We will highlight the fact that this building was initially approved by neighbors as condos for sale. We will question why it was never put on the market and express our frustration that businesses were not informed about the potential influx of a population that may not contribute financially to local restaurants. This provides an opportunity to address the impact on local businesses and discuss recent closures.
- Mental Health and Transparency: We will discuss the immense stress that this situation has caused for our community members, considering the existing challenges we already face. We will question the ethical treatment of tax-paying residents like ourselves and demand transparency in the decision-making process. We will strongly oppose the harm reduction approach, as we believe it places an undue burden on our community, as demonstrated by previous incidents.
Today's walk serves as a platform to raise these critical issues and advocate for a fair and sustainable solution that prioritizes the well-being of our community. We look forward to your participation and the collective strength of our united voices.
See you at the neighborhood walk today!
