In the run-up to Christmas in Ireland coursing clubs intensify their attack on the gentlest creatures in our countryside, with even more fixtures organised at which hares must run from pairs of greyhounds that themselves suffer appalling injuries.

In hail, rain, snow, and searing winds, the hares twist and turn and dodge as coursing fans well wrapped up in comfy winter gear applaud or mark betting cards. Though the dogs wear muzzles they strike and maul the hares, tossing them about like paper dolls.

Thanks to all you've signed or shared this petition. Increasing numbers of politicians are coming round to our way of thinking, but many more need to be persuaded that hares don't deserve this annual Circus of Terror that runs from the end of September to the middle of February. Progress is slow but some day hare coursing will be banned in the Republic of Ireland, as it is already in Northern Ireland (or the "Six Counties" as that part of Ireland is also called.)
