We, the undersigned residents of the central residential suburbs of eThekwini (Durban), urgently call upon the eThekwini Municipality to:

Place an immediate moratorium on the approval of any new student accommodation in the affected areas, pending a formal feasibility study to determine the actual need for further student accommodation.
Investigate all existing student accommodation in Glenwood, Umbilo, Carrington Heights, Glenmore, Manor Gardens and Westridge, (areas within Ward 33 and Ward 101), to ensure compliance with zoning, building, health and safety requirements.
Take appropriate enforcement action, including closure where legally justified, against non-compliant student accommodation establishments.
We believe that no further student accommodation should be approved until the Municipality has assessed the need, impact and capacity of these residential areas and addressed existing non-compliance.

We therefore call for urgent municipal intervention to protect the character, safety and quality of life of our residential communities.
