Petition Update - KCC will debate the Dover protests next month

Dear petition signatories,

Thank you! The Dover protest petition has been submitted and given it had over 1,500 signatories, it will be debated at Kent County Council at the Growth, Environment and Transport committee on the 10th November at 10am. This is not a Full Council meeting, which would require a petition of over 5,000 signatures. However, it is a public Cabinet Committee meeting, and the discussion will be live streamed, recorded and reflected in the formal minutes.

The meeting will include:

  • A formal KCC officer response to the petition wording.
  • The petition organiser or their named representative will read off a 5-minute statement alongside a submitted 500-word statement.
  • The relevant Cabinet Member and supporting officers will submit a response.
  • The relevant KCC Cabinet Member will speak for up to five minutes.
  • It would then be debated by Members for a maximum of 45 minutes before the Committee decides how to respond to the petition. Where it has the authority to do so, it may take the action the petition requests or may choose not to for reasons put forward during the debate. It may commission further investigation into the matter, for example by the relevant Cabinet Member or Committee.

Once again, thank you for signing the petition, we hope the upcoming discussion (and any action the committee may choose to do) will shed light on what more could have been done by KCC and their partners such as Kent Police to stop such intimidating situations from happening, and whether there are any lessons to be learnt.

Kind regards,

Cllr Rob Yates
