Petition for the Secession of Upstate New York from New York City

To: The People of New York State and the State Legislature

Subject: Proposal for Secession of Upstate New York from New York City Due to Economic Concerns

We, the undersigned residents of Upstate New York, are deeply concerned about the economic implications of the recent social programs proposed by Mayor Zohran Mamdani of New York City, along with Governor Kathy Hochul's support for these initiatives. We believe these policies will disproportionately impact the resources and services of Upstate New York, leading to economic strain and a decline in the quality of life for our communities.

Reasons for Petitioning for Secession:

Economic Impact:
The proposed social programs, including universal childcare, affordable housing initiatives, and free public transportation, are expected to require substantial funding that may be drawn from state resources, negatively affecting Upstate budgets.
Upstate New York is already facing challenges related to funding for essential services such as education, healthcare, and infrastructure. Redirecting funds to support NYC initiatives could exacerbate these issues.
Representation and Governance:
The interests and needs of Upstate New Yorkers are often overlooked in decisions made by city-centric leadership. A distinct governance structure would allow Upstate to prioritize its unique economic and social needs.
Secession would enable Upstate New York to establish policies that better reflect the values and priorities of its residents.
Cultural and Demographic Concerns:
The anticipated growth of the Muslim population in NYC and the potential social tensions that may arise could lead to divisions that further alienate Upstate residents from their urban counterparts.
A clear separation could foster community cohesion and address local demographic concerns without the pressures of NYC's diverse urban policies.
Preservation of Local Identity:
Upstate New York has its own rich cultural heritage and identity, which may be overshadowed by the policies and governance of New York City. Secession would allow for the preservation and promotion of our local values.
Call to Action:

We urge our fellow residents, local leaders, and state representatives to consider the long-term implications of continued governance from New York City. We believe that a separate Upstate New York could thrive by pursuing tailored policies that foster economic growth, enhance public services, and respect the unique character of our communities.

We, the undersigned, call on the New York State Legislature to:

Initiate discussions regarding the feasibility of Upstate New York seceding from New York City.
Consider the establishment of a new governance model that reflects the needs of Upstate residents.
Protect Upstate resources and ensure equitable distribution of state funds.
