*Subject : Request to Postpone the 2025 Presidential Election to Friday, 20th March 2026 and Extend the Nomination Deadline to 30th November 2025.

*Summary of Request :
In accordance with the principles and procedures set forth in :

Bunreacht na hÉireann (The Constitution of Ireland),
Presidential Elections Act 1993,
Electoral Act 1992 (as amended), and
The legislative authority of the Oireachtas,
I, the undersigned, respectfully petition the Government of Ireland and the Oireachtas to postpone the upcoming Presidential Election currently scheduled for 2025 to Friday, 20th March 2026, and to extend the deadline for the filing of nominations to 30th November 2025, in light of:

The nation’s continuing recovery from the effects of the recent pandemic, and
Widespread civil unrest and social disruption, which have impaired the democratic process, hindered public engagement, and limited the fair and equal participation of all candidates and voters.

*Grounds for Petition ::

1. Constitutional and Legislative Context :

Article 12 of the Constitution stipulates that the President’s term shall be seven years and that an election must be held within the period prior to the expiration of this term. However, it does not expressly prohibit postponement under extraordinary national conditions, provided legislative authority is exercised and the democratic principles of representation are preserved.
The Presidential Elections Act 1993, which operationalizes the constitutional provisions, allows for the Minister responsible for elections to set and adjust dates and schedules for the presidential election by ministerial order, subject to legislative oversight.
The Electoral Act 1992 grants further powers to modify electoral procedure where necessary to ensure orderly and fair elections.
Under extraordinary national circumstances, the Oireachtas retains the sovereign power to legislate to adjust election timelines if required to preserve public order, ensure free and fair participation, and uphold the common good.

2. Current National Circumstances :

The aftermath of the pandemic continues to cause significant public health, economic, and logistical challenges, especially for communities already marginalised or economically vulnerable.
Recent civil unrest and social tensions have resulted in interruptions to public gatherings, political campaigning, voter registration, and civic education efforts.
Several regions remain in a state of limited civil mobility, affecting the ability of candidates—especially independents—to campaign equally and for voters to engage in a meaningful democratic process.
Public institutions are still operating under strain and backlog, making logistical execution of a national election more difficult and possibly unfair.

3. Proposed Revised Timeline Phase :

*Proposed New Last Date~ For Irish Presidential Nomination Filing Should Be :

30th November 2025  ;

*Proposed New Date ~ For irish Presidential Election Date :
Friday, 20 March 2026  ;

This will allow all — Candidates, Voters, Civil Society, and Electoral Bodies — sufficient time to recover, organise, and prepare for a free, fair, and transparent Presidential Election. It will also give extra time to prepapre all Presidential Election Candidates Of 2025 For Their Presidential Election Campaign and Public will be able to decide better.
