The Maine economic development system, put into place under the Longley administration, serves the interests of the profit motives of a public private hegemony, as written it its founding documents and evident in the statutory language, which uses the term "public private relationships, which is none other than a hegemony. The policies put into place under the Longley administration are arguably unconstitutional but deeply entrenched for forty years. While it would be difficult to change the system overnight, we can petition for changes that transform the system to serve the broad public rather than special interests only- at no cost to taxpayers! Maine has handed the people's voices and our rights over to corporate boards. Its time to take our government back to its original purpose to promote our common welfare. That means every level of the economy- from the grass roots to the large and/or well capitalized corporations. The Maine Made Program is a program. MTI is a non-profit public charity corporation with a board which can own intellectual property rights and make a profit. A fiscal sponsor must be a corporation. This petition asks that MTI be a fiscal sponsor for all Maine Made products, which means that qualifying makers can apply for foundation grants and take tax deductible donations. In the age of the vanishing middle class this is can help to replenish the capitalization of the middle sector. A thriving middle sector is the true measure of a successful economic development policy. When the middle sector thrives, it creates opportunities for those below it. The current system distributes opportunities to the top and rations to the bottom, as the middle is drained of its capitalization by corporate welfare above and general welfare below, Such a system is ultimately unsustainable.
