Level 1 autism in women and girls often looks different than it does in boys, which is why many are diagnosed later in life. They may mask their autistic traits by copying social behaviors, making friendships and social situations feel exhausting. Common traits include intense but socially accepted interests, sensory sensitivities, difficulty with change and organization, and a preference for direct communication. Many experience anxiety, burnout, or depression from years of masking. Alongside these challenges, autistic women and girls often have strengths such as attention to detail, creativity, honesty, deep focus, and strong empathy.
At work, women with Level 1 autism may be highly skilled and reliable but can face challenges with communication, sensory overload, and change. Busy or noisy environments, unclear instructions, and frequent interruptions can increase stress and make it harder to focus. Social expectations, such as small talk, teamwork, or networking, may feel exhausting, especially if they are masking their autistic traits. This can lead to anxiety, fatigue, and autistic burnout. With understanding, clear communication, and reasonable adjustments, they can thrive in their roles.
