Petition for Bird-safe glass for new building on University of New England campus

The Issue

To start, I would like to share a quotation directly from the University of New England website discussing the importance of the first year theme of the core curriculum, Environmental Awareness:

"You come to see that humans belong to ecosystems and that your future health and livelihood are more dependent than you ever imagined on cycles that involve other organisms, air, water, chemicals and energy."

  • UNE is within the migration route of many bird species, such as American Redstarts and Blue Jays.
  • UNE is currently planning a new building with one wall entirely made of glass windows. Although this will look beautiful, it poses significant threats to migrating and local birds.
  • The large expanse of glass could lead to many birds crashing into windows and dying on a larger scale than we have ever seen on campus.
  • Large scale deaths of migratory and local species could drastically impact the local ecosystem.
  • UNE should purchase Bird-safe glass in order to prevent the deaths of migratory and local birds.
