We want to take this moment to extend gratitude to everyone who signed the petition, shared it, and stood behind this call. Kenyans, allies, and human rights advocates have played an instrumental role in ensuring these crucial issues are not overlooked. Your voices and solidarity have sent a clear message over the past couple of months: what is happening in Kenya cannot simply be forgotten, and human rights must always be at the forefront of diplomacy.
Despite the visit proceeding as planned, we want to acknowledge the king of the Netherlands for his engagement with these concerns during the state visit. While our initial call was for reconsideration, the fact that these issues were addressed prominently at various points of the visit - during his first speech, the youth meeting at the Ambassador’s residence, his words at the state banquet, and during the press conference at the close of the visit - is a testament to the power of collective advocacy.
Through his speeches and remarks, King Willem-Alexander brought an unprecedented level of attention to these injustices, ensuring they are not buried under diplomatic pleasantries. By publicly addressing these issues, it has shown that state visits can and should be more than ceremonial—they should also be moments of reflection, responsibility, and progress.
We acknowledge that this visit has set a powerful precedent, while also recognizing that much work remains ahead. It marks a shift in how historical accountability and human rights are addressed at the highest levels. This moment affirms that the voices of those affected matter and encourages open, necessary conversations. Though the visit has taken place, the dialogue it ignited will continue. The journey toward meaningful change is far from over.
We remain hopeful that this particular visit will serve as a catalyst for deeper commitments and tangible actions toward justice. We urge both the Dutch and Kenyan governments to build on this momentum by engaging in concrete steps that reflect the spirit of accountability and respect for human rights.
We continue to continue to push forward, ensuring that the pursuit of truth, accountability, and dignity continues. [Read: Dutch Royal Visit must not ignore human rights]
