In cooperation with
The City Wide Parish of St. Monica Presents
The Architectural History of St Nicholas of Tolentine Church
With Dr. John Calabrese
Everyone is invited to a FREE presentation on Sunday, December 18, 2016 at 1:30 PM in Saint Nicholas of Tolentine Church, located at 1405 Pacific Ave. in Atlantic City, NJ.
Local native Dr. John Calabrese will discuss the historic and artistic architecture contained in St. Nicholas Church and what it represents about the past, present, and future of ourselves, parishioners and the Atlantic City community. St. Nicholas Church was built in 1905 and added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2001. The church is well known as a “great example of Classic Romanesque architecture in Southern New Jersey.”
Dr. John Calabrese is an accomplished Artist in detailed graphite pencil drawings and is currently the Professor of Art History at Texas Woman’s University. As a young boy, he attended St Michael’s Catholic Elementary School and Holy Spirit High School in Absecon, NJ. He received his BA in Art from The Catholic University of America in Washington, DC, his MFA in painting from Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, and his PhD in Comparative Arts from Ohio University in Athens, Ohio. Professor Calabrese particularly enjoys sharing the experience of Art and Architecture in person and regularly leads group visits and tours to museums, churches, palaces and ancient sites in Europe. Examples of Dr. Calabrese’s artwork can be viewed on the web at www.johncalabreseart.org.
This presentation about St. Nicholas Church is a follow up to Dr. Calabrese’s successful lecture last December on the Art and History of St. Michael’s Church. Free Will donations are welcomed that will be used to preserve St. Michael’s Church and to support other Catholic traditions within the citywide Parish of St. Monica.
The Parish of St. Monica serves all of Atlantic City and is the union of the city’s previous five Catholic Parishes: St Nicholas of Tolentine, Our Lady Star of the Sea, St Michael, Holy Spirit, and St Monica. The St. Michael’s Church Preservation Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving this century old Catholic Church as a spiritual, social, cultural and historical site.
