Dear Community – While I had initially planned to focus primarily on June 4th in this update, there is a more urgent matter.
As you know, there’s a meeting about the Superintendent’s self-evaluation today, May 31st, at 10am at the FACE center . Please come in person as they intentionally made Zoom not an option . Also speaker form here.
If you choose to make comments, here are some additional suggestions:
- According to BP9400 (Board Self Evaluation ) not only the board needs to conduct a self-evaluation of its performance, but also according to BP2140 (Evaluation Of The Superintendent) the board is required to “at the open session after the Superintendent's evaluation or at a subsequent meeting, the Board and Superintendent shall jointly identify performance goals for the next year.” The question that arises is whether this process has been completed and if so, what are the mutually agreed upon performance goals for the upcoming year?
- The high staff turnover rate plus the layoffs are glaring indicators of a toxic culture. This instability is damaging to our educational environment and ultimately, to our students. We must ask ourselves, is this the nurturing environment we envisioned for our educators and students?
- Our budget is in a critical state, with funds being expended without a clear long-term strategy. Despite numerous warnings from the county, there seems to be no concrete plan to remedy this financial crisis. We demand the full Budget Advisory Committee with parents involved reinstated this month. Furthermore, the recently published budget overview for 2024-2025 does not provide a clear projection of the anticipated deficit for that fiscal year. It also lacks a comprehensive breakdown of the total expenditures. This lack of detail and transparency is concerning. Link to post here
- Furthermore, our students’ performance is suffering, with scores hitting a historical low. Despite Dr Garcia’s frequent citations of John Hattie research, there seems to be a disconnect in translating this into effective change for student learning.
- The community implores you (the board) to reflect on these points. It’s time to ask the hard questions: By what measurements is she succeeding? By what measurements is she failing?
- Our community deserves leaders who will confront these issues head-on, not those who deflect blame and hide behind excuses. It’s time for the Board to demonstrate true leadership.
Dr Garcia Contract for reference.
