Title: Make it permanent: South Africa needs a standing National Commission on Crime and Corruption — don’t let the Madlanga Commission die

Petition to: The Speaker of the National Assembly and the President of the Republic of South Africa

Crime is robbing every South African. The World Bank says it costs us at least 10% of our GDP — around R700 billion — every single year. That is money stolen from jobs, schools, hospitals and safety in our communities.

But we have proof of what works.

The Zondo Commission cost the state R1 billion — and its findings have already brought back more than R16 billion in recovered assets. Sixteen rand back for every rand spent.

The Madlanga Commission, on a budget of just R148 million, exposed corruption at the very top of our police. Within a year, 13 senior officers — including the National Commissioner — were criminally charged. The country watched them answer under oath, on live television. That is what accountability looks like.

And now? The Madlanga Commission delivers its final report on 16 November 2026 — and then it disappears. Its investigators, its systems, its momentum: dissolved. Just like every commission before it. And the criminals simply wait for the cameras to switch off.

We, the undersigned, call on Parliament and the President to:

1. Pass legislation establishing a PERMANENT National Commission on Crime and Integrity — with jurisdiction over crime and corruption in BOTH the public and private sectors: government, police, state-owned enterprises, municipalities, and the corporations, cartels and enablers who profit from wrongdoing.

2. Keep the hearings PUBLIC and televised — because open hearings are the strongest deterrent this country has ever deployed against the corrupt.

3. Make it financially self-sustaining — funded partly by a share of the very assets it helps recover. Zondo proved the model: accountability pays for itself many times over.

4. Preserve the Madlanga Commission’s staff, evidence and systems as the foundation of the permanent commission — don’t dissolve it, transform it.

A formal petition has been lodged with Parliament. Every signature here tells our representatives that South Africans demand that the rules apply to everyone, permanently — not just when there’s a commission in session.

Sign now. Share it. Don’t let accountability expire on 16 November.

— Oko Macanda, lead petitioner, and the undersigned people of South Africa
