Erinn Heffes started this petition to Pepperdine Administration

Members of the student body are writing to ask that the following proposals be taken into consideration at Pepperdine University, to improve the way Pepperdine supports its black students and approaches race and diversity on campus and within the curriculum:

1. Hire a Chief Diversity Officer

-This person would be chosen by a trusted committee of faculty and student representatives. The committee would be suggested by student representatives within departments such as Intercultural Affairs and organizations such as Black Student Association.
-Supports and provides equity and inclusion on the Pepperdine campus AND in the curriculum in each school/college at Pepperdine.
-Considered as part of the Pepperdine Upper Administrative Department.
-Supports diversity training workshops for Pepperdine faculty and departments.

2. Institute a Seaver General Education Course on Diversity and Inclusion

-Intercultural Affairs could be included in constructing what this may look like, seeing as they have done initiatives on diversity such as the intergroup dialogue and the Diversity Peer Educators Program.

3. Be active in reacting and responding to students, faculty and staff who violate Pepperdine’s nondiscrimination policies.

-Refine the nondiscrimination policies found on Pepperdine’s website.
-Follow through with a formal consequence that would be faced by those who violate discrimination policies.

4. Redistribute funds within Pepperdine departments, so that every department (particularly those who support and minority groups on campus) is able to support Pepperdine students to the fullest degree.

-Increase transparency between departments so redistribution is able to occur smoothly.

5. Be active in donating to different foundations that support and represent the groups that are represented and located on Pepperdine’s campus.

-Create a specific fund at Pepperdine dedicated to supporting these outside organizations - possibly use Give2Pepp as a resource to aid these donations.
-Allow the organizations to be chosen by a body of student representatives, for example, the eboard of the Black Student Association and Latino Student Association.
